Analysis - Garchomp

Defensive Combinations

Garchomp is a Dragon / Ground Pokemon, and it has a weakness to Dragon and Ice attacks, a resistance to Fire, Poison and Rock attacks and an immunity to Electric attacks. The only Pokemon that resist Dragon attacks are Steel types, which also happen to resist Ice attacks, so most Steel Pokemon tend to complement Garchomp well defensively. Bronzong / Forretress and Garchomp cover each other especially well, as Bronzong / Forretress resist Dragon and Ice attacks, and Garchomp resists Fire attacks. Other Steel Pokemon, such as Metagross, Jirachi and Empoleon also resist Dragon and Ice, but be aware that Garchomp does not assist these Pokemon's additional Ground weakness.

Garchomp can use its own Electric immunity and helpful Fire and Rock resists to be a good defensive complement to Pokemon such as Gyarados (weak to Electric and Rock), Skarmory (weak to Fire and Electric and also resists Dragon), Moltres (weak to Rock and Electric), Weavile (weak to Fire and Rock and also resists Ice) and especially Abomasnow (weak to Fire, Poison and Rock).

Defensive trios with Garchomp are usually built with a Steel Pokemon and Garchomp's Electric immunity and Fire resistance in mind. Garchomp + Magnezone + Gyarados is an especially effective defensive trio, as every type in the game is resisted. Garchomp + Skarmory + Tentacruel also form an interesting defensive trio, and not simply because they resist every type in the game as well. Skarmory provides top tier physical defense, Tentacruel provides top tier special defense and Garchomp provides an Electric immunity for Skarmory and Tentacruel.
