ArticleIntroduction Experience is a crucial aspect of in-game Pokémon. When a Pokémon earns enough Experience Points through battling, it will level up and thus increase its stats. However, even the novice player will notice that Experience Points are not a constant for each Pokémon - he or she might notice that weaker Pokémon tend to level up faster, or that higher lever Pokémon give out considerably more Experience Points. The player might even begin to trade Pokémon solely for the reason of getting that Experience boost on a traded Pokémon. This guide will take a look at the inner workings of Experience Points in Pokémon including how they are earned and how they are calculated, as well as include lists of Pokémon that fit in a certain Experience group. Table of Contents How they are earned 1a. In battle 1b. Exp Share 1c. Experience and EVs 1d. Boosting your EXP How they are calculated 2a. The EXP formula 2b. Base experience 2c. Level up rates 3. Credits How they are earned - How to earn and boost Experience Points! 1a. In battle Any Pokémon that enters a battle will earn Experience points, unless it is a Battle Tower battle or Wifi battle. The number of experience points earned will be split evenly among each Pokémon involved in the battle. In a battle where 12,000 total Experience points (EXP) are earned and all 6 Pokémon are used, each of these Pokémon will earn 2,000 EXP. 1b. Exp Share The Experience Share (EXP Share) is an item that allows a Pokémon who was not involved in a battle to still earn EXP. This item is given to you on Route 206 by your rival. It can also be won by matching three numbers on the Jubilife TV lottery. If the Pokémon holding the EXP share is not brought out into the battle, it will earn half of the total EXP (E/2), and the other Pokémon will earn E/2n experience each, where n is the number of Pokémon involved in the battle. If the Pokémon holding the EXP share is brought out into battle, it will earn EXP using the following formula: E/2 + E/2n, where E is the total EXP earned and n is the number of Pokémon used in the battle (including the one holding the EXP share). For example, in a battle where 3,000 EXP are earned and distributed among 3 Pokémon, one of which is holding an EXP Share, that Pokémon will earn (3,000)/2 + 3,000/2(3) = 2,000 EXP. 1c. Experience and EVs If a Pokémon earns EXP in a battle, it will also earn the full number of EVs given by that Pokémon. Starting with the third generation of Pokémon (Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald), even a Pokémon with an EXP share that does not enter a battle will still earn full EVs for that battle. 1d. Boosting your EXP There are three ways to boost the amount of EXP a Pokémon earns. The first is to attach the Lucky Egg item to the Pokémon who will be earning EXP. This item boosts the amount of EXP earned, although it is quite rare - it has a 5% drop rate on wild Chansey. The second way is to trade a Pokémon with someone else. If a Pokémon has a different ID number from the trainer who is using it, it will earn more EXP. The third way is to transfer a Pokémon from a previous version to Diamond or Pearl through Pal Park. The actual multipliers for the EXP earned will be explored in the next part of the guide. How they are calculated - How to calculate the Experience Points earned in battle 2a. The EXP formula The amount of experience earned by defeating a Pokémon is given by the formula: EXP = ((((Base EXP * Level) / 7) * B) * E) * T After every step, the result is rounded down, so the formula can be written floor(floor(floor(floor(BE * L) / 7) * B) * E) * T Let's take a look at each of these variables. Base EXP is the base experience given by the enemy Pokémon (this will be looked at in the next section.) Level is the level of the enemy Pokémon. Bis the trainer battle boost - B = 1 if the enemy Pokémon is wild, and B= 1.5 if the defending Pokémon is a trainer's Pokémon. This explains to the novice why gym leaders and elite 4 members will give more EXP than wild Pokémon. E is the Lucky Egg boost - E = 1 if your Pokémon is not holding a Lucky Egg, and B = 1.5 if your Pokémon is holding a Lucky Egg. T is the trade or Pal Park boost - T = 1 if your Pokémon comes from Sinnoh and has your Trainer ID, T = 1.5 if your Pokémon has been transferred from Pal Park, and T = 1.7 if your Pokémon's ID number does not match your ID number, i.e. the Pokémon was obtained in a trade. Now let's focus on the first of these variables, the Base Experience. 2b. Base Experience Base Experience is almost like a base stat - it is different for almost every Pokémon. Usually, stronger Pokémon tend to have higher Base Experience stats than weaker Pokémon. Here is a list of the Base Experience stats of all Pokémon, sorted in descending order. Level-up Rates The novice player will notice that, as a Pokémon levels up, it will takemore and more time and EXP in order to reach the next level. Also, theplayer might notice that certain Pokémon take longer to level up than others, even at the same level. This is because each Pokémon is given one of six level up rates. A level up rate is the formula which gives the cumulative EXP needed in order to reach a given level. The six level up rate formulae are exponential, meaning that as the level increases, the number of cumulative EXP needed will increase at a faster rate. Now let's take a look at the six level up rates. First type - Fast Cumulative experience needed to reach level n = 0.8n3 Experience needed for level 100 = 0.8(1003) = 800,000 Pokémon with this growth rate: Aipom Ambipom Ariados Azumarill Azurill Banette Blissey Chansey Chimecho Chingling Clefable Clefairy Cleffa Corsola Delcatty Delibird Dusclops Dusknoir Duskull Glameow Granbull Grumpig Happiny Igglybuff Jigglypuff Ledian Ledyba Lunatone Luvdisc Marill Mawile Misdreavus Mismagius Purugly Shuppet Skitty Smeargle Snubbull Solrock Spinarak Spinda Spoink Togekiss Togepi Togetic Wigglytuff Second type - Medium Fast Cumulative experience needed to reach level n = n3 Experience needed for level 100 = 1003 = 1,000,000 Pokémon with this growth rate: Arbok Beedrill Butterfree Caterpie Dewgong Diglett Dodrio Doduo Dugtrio Ekans Farfetch'd Fearow Golbat Golduck Grimer Kakuna Magnemite Magneton Mankey Meowth Metapod Muk Ninetales Onix Paras Parasect Persian Pikachu Ponyta Primeape Psyduck Raichu Rapidash Raticate Rattata Sandshrew Sandslash Seel Slowbro Slowpoke Spearow Venomoth Venonat Vulpix Weedle Zubat Third type - Slow Cumulative experience needed to reach level n = 1.25n3 Experience needed for level 100 = 1.25(1003) = 1,250,000 Pokémon with this growth rate: Aerodactyl Arcanine Articuno Chinchou Cloyster Dragonair Dragonite Dratini Entei Exeggcute Exeggutor Growlithe Gyarados Heracross Ho-oh Houndoom Houndour Lanturn Lapras Larvitar Lugia Magikarp Mantine Mewtwo Miltank Moltres Piloswine Pinsir Pupitar Raikou Ralts Rhydon Rhyhorn Shellder Skarmory Snorlax Stantler Starmie Staryu Suicune Swinub Tauros Tentacool Tentacruel Tyranitar Zapdos Fourth type - Medium Slow Cumulative experience needed to reach level n = 1.2n3 - 15n2 + 100n - 140 Experience needed for level 100 = 1.2(1003) - 15(1002) + 100(10) - 140 = 1,059,860 Pokémon with this growth rate: Abra Alakazam Bayleef Bellsprout Blastoise Bulbasaur Charizard Charmander Charmeleon Chikorita Cyndaquil Gastly Gengar Geodude Gloom Golem Graveler Haunter Ivysaur Kadabra Machamp Machoke Machop Meganium Mew Nidoking Nidoqueen Nidoran♀ Nidoran♂ Nidorina Nidorino Oddish Pidgeot Pidgeotto Pidgey Poliwag Poliwhirl Poliwrath Quilava Squirtle Typhlosion Venusaur Victreebel Vileplume Wartortle Weepinbell The two remaining types have complicated formulae, but they will be listed for reference in this guide. Fifth type - Fluctuating The cumulative experience needed to reach level n is given by the piecewise function: n3((24 + ((n + 1)/3))/50) if 0 < n < 15 n3((14 + n)/50) if 16 < n < 35 n3((32 + (n/2))/50) if 36 < n < 100 A few examples will be provided that use each piece of the function. Experience needed for level 15 = 153((24 + ((15 + 1)/3))/50) = 1,980 Experience needed for level 35 = 353((14 + 35)/50) = 42,017 Experience needed for level 100 = n3((32+(100/2))/50) = 1,640,000 Pokémon with this growth rate: Breloom Corphish Crawdaunt Drifblim Drifloon Gulpin Hariyama Illumise Makuhita Seviper Shroomish Swalot Wailmer Wailord Sixth type - Erratic The cumulative experience needed to reach level n is given by the piecewise function: n3((100 - n)/50) if 0 < n < 50 n3((150 - n)/50) if 51 < n < 68 n3(1.274 - (n/150) - p(n mod 3)) if 69 < n < 98 n3((160 - n)/100) if 99 < n < 100 "mod" is a mathematical operation that expresses the remainder of "n/3". p(n mod 3) can be expressed with another function: p(n mod 3) = 0 if n mod 3 = 0 p(n mod 3) = 0.008 if n mod 3 = 1 p(n mod 3) = 0.014 if n mod 3 = 2 Experience needed for level 50 = 503((100 - 50)/50) = 125,000 Experience needed for level 68 = 683((150 - 68)/50) = 314,432 Experience needed for level 98 = 983(1.274 - (1/50)(98/3) - p(98 mod 3)) = 570,990 Experience needed for level 100 = n3((160 - 100)/100) = 600,000 Pokémon with this growth rate: Altaria Anorith Armaldo Clamperl Cradily Feebas Lileep Milotic Nincada Ninjask Shedinja Swablu Volbeat Zangoose 3.
